For your enjoyment and ours, here’s a colourful collection of Soviet Christmas cards from a bygone era. Santa in the Space Age, the popularisation of tv sets and telephones, wooden skis and an unsettling snowman are all given the nod in our edit of illustrated designs.

In Russia, it’s traditional to celebrate the New Year with an official five-day holiday from 1-5 January so most of the below cards, although full of Christmas scenes, in fact offer the greeting ChoBbim Roдom! (that’s Happy New Year)…
