We know that inspiration is all around us and can often be found in the most unlikely places. Colours of My Week attempts to capture this spirit by showing a glimpse of the colourful lives that people lead…
This time we spend seven days with John Booth, a fashion illustrator and textile designer based in east London, who is also an Associate Lecturer in Fashion at Central St Martin’s. Bursting with creativity and with a great eye for the quirks of line and the power of colour, John’s work caught our eye when he was illustrating the 2015 Paris Menswear collections for Nick Knight’s SHOWstudio fashion film website. Working in real time and live on video his illustrations, made as the models hit the runway, capture the spirit of the clothes and the excitement of the shows.
Colour, line and energy
We asked him to share some of his own colour inspiration with us, as he opens up his Instagram feed to show us what has caught his eye out in his local neighbourhood…
“I wish I had bought this old filing cabinet that I spotted for sale on Hackney Road.
I love the accidental pattern created from the build up of years worth of random stickers.”
“I thought my boyfriend’s embroidered workwear jacket looked good against these Peter Doig paintings
at a recent exhibition at the Michael Zwirner Gallery in Mayfair.”
“Another Hackney Road find. I loved the colour combination.”
“I recently illustrated the Paris Mens Spring Summer 2015 collections for Nick Knight’s website SHOWstudio.
I particularly enjoyed illustrating the Raf Simons show, as I feel he uses colour and pattern very well.”
“A beautiful mix of colours in this unbelievable sculpture by Phyllida Barlow at the Tate Britain.”
“I was testing out my stationery before doing some illustration, but i ended up creating an accidental composition that I really liked.”
“This Brian Harris, a former fashion tutor of mine at Central Saint Martins. He always looks absolutely brilliant.”
