Wedding season: sorted

It’s wedding season. If you’re reading this between booking a reasonably-priced B&B in Hampshire and frantically trying to persuade your mum to have the kids for a full weekend, then bravo. I salute you. Wedding season is brutal. It strains the purse strings, the calendar and the energy levels. I had EIGHT last year. Honestly, it’s a miracle I’m still alive!

One thing that really flummoxes many of us is the conundrum of the gift list. WHAT to buy the happy couple? Gift lists are classically packed with crystal tumblers, fancy crockery and all manner of expensive yet oddly impersonal presents. I mean, do they really need a set of Mauviel saucepans? Will they think of me every time they use them to heat up soup? And surely most crystalware spends its life gathering dust in the loft? Doesn’t it all seem a bit…thoughtless?

In an age where most couples have been living together for years before they get married and probably have all the cut-glass crystal they could possibly need, it’s time to get creative. But where to start? Here’s a handy list of the most thoughtful wedding presents around that won’t hobble your bank account and that the bride and groom will actually love.

Brace yourself, we’re going (gasp) off-list

Personalised Oak Chopping Board

What did we even do before notonthehighstreet.com? There are SO many things you could choose on here, but one of our favourites is this hefty chopping board engraved with the couples initials. They’ll have it forever and use it ALL the time.

Personalised Wedding Map Illustration

I love maps. I think they always go down well as a gift. Try this personalised one (again from good old NOTHS) and you’ll have one very happy couple.

Personalised Champagne & Salted Caramels Box

For the couple that have everything and love the high life, you can’t go wrong with a bit of Fortnum & Mason. This bubbly and chocs box features salted caramel and can be personalised. It’s the very embodiment of fanciness.

Quba & Co. Sailcloth Holdall

If the bride and groom have a nautical side, this is ideal. Made to last a lifetime, a Quba & Co. barrel bag is hardy, cool and can be personalised with the couple’s initials or names. A fantastic honeymoon-ready gift.

Hand Drawn Map of London

Maps again, but bear with me. Jenni Sparks is to illustrated maps what the Kardashians are to Instagram. If it’s a London wedding with a cool, artsy couple, Sparks’ intricate and frankly awe-inspiring map of The Big Smoke will make their day.

Ceramic Hand Painted Flamingo Egg Cup

The kooky option. If your bride is a homewares addict and loves a bit of funky kitchen action, why not splash out on a set of quirky egg cups? These flamingo ones from Graham & Green are sublime.
