Insta Inspiration: hyperreal sketches of paint

As we’ve reported here at The Chromologist before, paint is definitely a thing on Instagram, with videos celebrating the seemingly simple art of mixing paint colours together having a flash of popularity earlier this year. The latest artist creating art about that is all about paint itself is Australian CJ Hendry, who has been setting Instagram alight with her large images of paint blobs.

The really amazing thing about these images – each a complete one-off of a specific shade – is that despite the eye registering the wet, glossy, 3D texture of oil paint, they are actually all created with coloured pencils. Hard to believe – each image really does look as if you could reach out and scoop a blob of it onto your finger, but in fact the images are flat. Hendry adds a finishing layer of dry pigment over the coloured pencil to fully achieve an authentic sheen.

Hendry’s work is currently appearing on large billboards and her work has attracted the attention of the famously red-soled Louboutin shoe brand, resulting in the LouboutinxCJ collaboration. The paintings are all available to view and buy at her website, but you can also follow her on Instagram (@cj_hendry) where you can also view behind-the-scenes shots from her studio and fascinating videos of works in progress.
