A nipple slip? Another mystifying Kanye speech? You could see this and more at the recent MTV music awards, but colour-lovers will have had their eyes on one thing only – the trippy, kaleidoscopic art that served as a back-drop to Miley Cyrus entering the stage via a slide. The moving backdrop was the work of artist Jen Stark, an LA-based artist who works primarily in brightly coloured cut paper. Creating animations, 2-D art and sculptures, Stark has created some of the most colourful, joyful and eye-watering art you’ll ever see, and MTV obviously saw her work as perfect for their youthful, vibrant brand. Working with David Lewandowski, director and animation artist, the animated ‘wormhole’ she created can be seen behind Miley as she makes her grand entrance… but we think it’s worth looking at on it’s own.
Here is how it appeared on the night.

Stark’s work looks fun and energetic, but is built up using layer after layer of cut coloured paper to achieve its effects. The amazing thing about her pieces – apart from the breadth of colour – is that even the static pieces seem to throb and shift before your eyes. This sculpture below demonstrates the level of detail and volume of layers involved.
