The hair dye that changes colour as you move

Is your hair is on FIRE? It’s the name of a new hair colour that changes shade as you wear it, and is the creation of TheUnseen. THE UNSEEN is a development studio and lab collective, but the collective also has an artist slant and a sense of mystery and magic. We first encountered THEUNSEEN at their Somerset House exhibition of 2014. Four mysterious videos featuring the process taking place, over the course of a single time-lapse shot, were launched at the BFC Space at London Fashion Week, in collaboration with Storm Models. The FIRE colour is currently a semi-permeant dye lasting over a few washes.

The hair dye changes colour according to temperature, meaning it reacts both to a heat change like going out of doors, but also to body heat. There is certainly an increased daring and individual flair when it comes to hair colouring at the moment, with rainbow colours and dip-dye looks making a success of stylists like Not Another Salon. Lauren Bowker, the alchemist behind The Unseen, has embraced this trend and is taking it to its logical conclusion, with work on a permanent version of the dye underway. From black to blonde, blue to red, could this be the first hair dye that genuinely changes to suit your mood?
